  1. Packers Snap Counts: Oren Burks & bubble WRs got extended looks vs. Titans Tallying up the snap counts is always an interesting exercise in regular season football games Youth Randall Cobb Jersey , but in the preseason it probably leads to far more interesting and valuable conclusions. The Green Bay Packers defeated the Tennessee Titans 31-17 on Thursday night and they divided up their snaps across all levels of the depth chart. However, there are plenty of useful observations that we can make by looking at these numbers. The Packers out-snapped the Titans by a wide margin in the game — 93 to 65 — and it showed in the final time of possession, which went 35:34 for Green Bay to 24:26 for Tennessee. The Titans actually led in TOP by a few seconds at the half, but a 7:45 drive to start the third quarter and a quick Titans turnover two series later gave the Packers a huge edge overall. Here’s a look at how the playing time broke down.OFFENSE (93 plays)QuarterbacksDeShone Kizer 37, Tim Boyle 32, Brett Hundley 24Kizer led all the Packers quarterbacks in total snaps despite running just two series; both drives ended inside the Titans’ five-yard line (one had a failed fourth down and the other was a touchdown). That high snap count was due to a multitude of penalties by both teams on both drives. Meanwhile Hundley got three series early on, resulting in one scoring drive and one turnover (that wasn’t really his fault).Boyle took over with about six minutes left in the third quarter and showed off his deep ball, connecting on big plays with Equanimeous St. Brown (for 28 yards), Marquez Valdes-Scantling (a 15-yard touchdown), and Jake Kumerow (a 52-yard bomb for a score). He also hit an open J’Mon Moore right in stride on what would have been another explosive play, but Moore dropped the football. All told, all three quarterbacks had positive moments throwing the football, interspersed with some reasons for concern, and each threw for over 100 yards on the day.Running BacksJoel Bouagnon 34, Ty Montgomery 29, Aaron Ripkowski 21, Akeem Judd 17, Jamaal Williams 13It wasn’t a big day on the stat sheet for the Packers’ runners, with no player racking up more than 30 yards from scrimmage. However, Williams had a few tough runs early and he scored the Packers’ first touchdown on a reception in the flat, while Bouagnon added a goal-line score in the third quarter. Montgomery was particularly impressive in pass protection, as he picked up multiple blitzes that allowed his quarterbacks enough time to get the football out of their hands.Wide ReceiversEquanimeous St. Brown 44, J’Mon Moore 42, DeAngelo Yancey 40, Jake Kumerow 39, Marquez Valdes-Scantling 38, Geronimo Allison 27, Davante Adams 8, Kyle Lewis 3Predictably Youth Clay Matthews Jersey , the five bubble receivers who are auditioning for jobs (including the three draft picks) each got similar numbers of snaps. However, it appeared that Kumerow and Moore did not show up on the field for the first drive with the “starting” offense. St. Brown and Valdes-Scantling were impressive, as MVS led the way with five catches for 101 yards and a touchdown and EQ caught four balls for 61 yards.Kumerow was largely quiet early on, thanks in part to some inaccurate passes from the Packers’ quarterbacks in his general direction. However, he appeared to run crisp routes throughout the contest and hauled in a 52-yard deep ball from Boyle up the left sideline late in the game to put away the win.Moore caught three passes for 27 yards, but his drops will be the story of the game. Including plays that were erased by penalty, Moore saw nine targets, but at least three of them were catchable balls; two were contested and one was the ugly drop on what could have been a long touchdown. He also added a holding penalty on a kickoff return.Yancey caught just two passes for 10 yards.Tight EndsEmanuel Byrd 28, Robert Tonyan 26, Kevin Rader 21, Lance Kendricks 13, Ryan Smith 13, Marcedes Lewis 8The Packers also gave some young tight ends extended action, though they were not heavily involved in the passing game. The only receptions came from Tonyan (for 10 yards) and Smith (seven yards). Offensive LinemenAdam Pankey 70, Kyle Murphy 61, Dillon Day 58, Jason Spriggs 51, Kofi Amichia 51, Justin McCray 42, Byron Bell 42, Alex Light 33, Austin Davis 33, Lucas Patrck 13, Corey Linsley 12The Packers’ tackles struggled heavily against the ones and twos for Tennessee, particularly Bell and Murphy. Each was beaten for multiple pressures and turnover plays — Murphy allowed a strip-sack to Harold Landry on a speed rush (which Patrick luckily recovered) while Bell allowed Gemil President to hit Hundley while he threw, leading to an interception. All told, Bell gave up six pressures and Murphy four, according to Pro Football Focus. When Tennessee got into their reserves, the Packers’ backup linemen fared better; Boyle had plenty of time to throw for much of his stint in the game. One oddity was the fact that Bell got the start at right tackle ahead of Spriggs , who came on later. Mike McCarthy only said after the game that “something happened” this week to lead to that decision without elaborating.DEFENSEDefensive LinemenMontravius Adams 34, James Looney 32, Dean Lowry 27, Joey Mbu 17, Conor Sheehy 17, Tyler Lancaster 16, Kenny Clark 11With no Mike Daniels or Muhammad Wilkerson, the Packers leaned on their trio of reserves heavily — it’s clear to see where the distinction is between the second-team line and the third unit. Adams had a few nice moments and Lowry remains solid, while Sheehy had a few nice plays against the run.Outside LinebackersReggie Gilbert 35, Kyler Fackrell 35, Vince Biegel 22, James Hearns 17, Chris Odom 14, Kendall Donnerson 7Gilbert and Fackrell started the game on the outside and it’s clear from this game that Gilbert is ready for extended NFL action, even against starting tackles. He repeatedly set a good edge against the run and drew at least one holding penalty, and PFF credited him with four pass rush pressures in 19 snaps. The other players were just okay, aside from one impressive play early in the fourth quarter. Donnerson — whose speed and athleticism are obvious — still needs to learn the finer points of football, but he stripped running back Akrum Wadley on a carry up the middle, and Biegel recovered.Fackrell recorded the Packers’ lone sack in the stat sheet, but it was on a scramble by backup QB Blaine Gabbert that went for no gain.Inside LinebackersOren Burks 41, Greer Martini 29, Ahmad Thomas 27, Blake Martinez 13, Naashon Hughes 10, Marcus Porter 9Unsurprisingly, Burks played with both the starting defense and the second string, and although he allowed several completions, he shut each of them down quickly after the catch was made. Only one of those receptions went for a first down, as Burks finished with six total tackles to lead the team.Thomas and Martini both flashed a bit as well; Thomas got a hit on a quarterback in pass rush and recorded three tackles Youth JK Scott Jersey , while Martini lined up with the first-team kick coverage unit and picked up three tackles (one on special teams).SafetiesMarwin Evans 37, Raven Greene 26, Kentrell Brice 21, Jermaine Whitehead 19, Josh Jones 14, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix 10The safety position was the only one hit by notable injury on Thursday night; Whitehead left the game in the first half with a back injury and Jones went to the locker room to be evaluated for a concussion. In addition to these players taking snaps on the back end, Quinten Rollins also lined up at free safety a few times, likely filling in as well as to see if he can show anything there since he has struggled elsewhere.CornerbacksJosh Jackson 34, Josh Hawkins 26, Demetri Goodson 25, Lenzy Pipkins 24, Quinten Rollins 22, Herb Waters 20, Donatello Brown 14, Davon House 10Jackson didn’t show up much on the stat sheet, but he had good coverage for most of the game — far better than his veteran counterparts, even though he got called for a holding penalty in the first half. That was an extremely questionable call, however, as he was in good position and got just enough of his receiver’s jersey to make it look like he impeded the player’s progress.Rollins was burned on a big play on the first drive of the game, while House gave up a touchdown pass and Goodson got torched later in the game. Pipkins maintained his physical brand of play, racking up five tackles, and he also recorded the Packers’ only pass breakup on the night. The Green Bay Packers got an early gift from the Miami Dolphins on Sunday afternoon. Two men named Aaron ensured that the team would make them pay for it.After driving deep into Packers territory, the Dolphins coughed up the football. A shotgun snap sailed over Brock Osweiler’s head — which is six feet and eight inches off the ground — and Reggie Gilbert pounced on the ball, giving Green Bay its first turnover since the 49ers game. Aaron Rodgers and Aaron Jones made sure the Packers got seven points in eight plays.Rodgers completed four of five passes for 36 yards, while Jones caught two of those balls for 27 yards. He also added a pair of runs for 27 more yards for 54 total on the drive, setting the Packers up at the seven-yard line. Then it was Davante Adams’ turn. With Adams lined up on the outside of Marquez Valdes-Scantling, the two receivers ran double slants, and Rodgers found Adams in the back corner of the end zone for a diving touchdown reception:The Packers lead 7-0 after that play midway through the first quarter.

During his Monday press conference Cheap Josh Allen Jersey , Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott shared that Josh Allen has been throwing as part of his rehab, and his return can be considered day-to-day. It will be worth monitoring if Allen is able to play on Sunday, when the Bills travel to New Jersey to face the New York Jets. Right tackle Jordan Mills has been replaced by Jeremiah Sirles while left guard Vlad Ducasse was subbed out in favor of rookie Wyatt Teller.Mills returned after one series. So did Ducasse. They each missed one offensive drive on consecutive series.Mills has started every game at right tackle since head coach Sean McDermott was hired. Ducasse started the final 12 games of the year at right guard last year, replacing Jonathan Miller, before flipping to start the first eight games of the year at left guard this year. It’s not surprising that Buffalo is sprinkling in other players. The offensive line has been horrible in 2018. Teller was the team’s fifth-round selection in April’s NFL Draft. Sirles was signed by Buffalo at the end of September after his release from the Carolina Panthers. (It should be noted Youth Matt Milano Jersey , he was only with the Panthers for five months and wasn’t there when Bills general manager Brandon Beane and coach Sean McDermott were with the team.)
  3. Cheap Chris Jones Jersey

Chiefs Stock Report: Whose stock is rising Cheap Terrance Smith Jersey , or falling, after the win against the Steelers In stock market terms, securities or indices are found through technical analysis to have something called resistance levels. The idea is that there is a price that forms somewhat of a ceiling. The stock may bounce up against the resistance level but struggles to break through it. Until it does. Breaking the resistance level might be an indicator that the stock can reach levels where it hasn’t been before, setting a new ceiling and potentially a higher floor (support level). The Pittsburgh Steelers have been the resistance level for this franchise for years. Just when we think the Kansas City Chiefs are capable of competing for a conference title, the Steelers remind us that there is a ceiling. Perhaps breaking through, as the Chiefs did this week, is an indicator that the team will be able to reach a level we haven’t seen before.STOCK UPCharles LeClaire-USA TODAY SportsQuarterback Patrick Mahomes: It’s long been thought that Mahomes had a high ceiling, but that he wouldn’t reach it early in his career. People thought he’d throw many interceptions, and would take time to adjust to the pro game. Well, it appears that the pro game is going to need more time to adjust to Pat Mahomes. He’s destroying expectations thus far, indicating that we might have underestimated him, even with all of the hype. If 10 touchdowns, no interceptions and going undefeated on the road against playoff-level teams is a resistance level, what’s next for Mahomes?Confidence & mental toughness: The Chiefs have struggled to get to the next level, partially because they were unable to counter when punched. This team has won a lot of games by striking early, getting a lead, then trying to hold on. Sometimes it worked, other times momentum shifted to their opponent, and the Chiefs lacked the confidence and mental toughness to regain control of the game. This week, Mahomes and company came roaring out after halftime to regain command after the Steelers had overcome a three-touchdown deficit. Weaker Chiefs teams might have folded. It’s a great sign to see the 2018 team punch back with confidence.Left guard Cameron Erving: Surprises of the preseason included Erving being handed the left guard spot Dee Ford Jersey , ending the presumed competition, sending the other two recent starters off of the roster and getting a contract extension. The surprise of the regular season thus far for Erving is that it appears he’s proving the team correct. Erving hasn’t been very noticeable through the first two games, which is a great sign for an offensive lineman. We’ve seen a couple of highlights, without noting any embarrassing losses. So far, so good for No. 75.Philip G. Pavely-USA TODAY SportsTravis Kelce: Last week, he had a down week as it pertains to making plays, but excelled as a blocker. We rightfully assumed that his turn to be featured in the passing game would come soon enough. It did. His stat line of seven receptions, 109 yards and two touchdowns reminded fantasy owners what he can do. The way in which he dominated the Steelers over the middle and after the catch reminded teams that if they pay too much attention to Tyreek Hill, the Chiefs will make them pay.Sammy Watkins: Welcome to the show, Mr. Watkins. We’ve been expecting you. Watkins impressed in Week 2 with a 31-yard run to go along with his first 100-yard receiving game in a Chiefs uniform. He showed the speed, hands and run-after-catch ability that we hoped would be a tremendous complement to Tyreek Hill. Good luck, NFL defenses.Orlando Scandrick: The favorite subject of Chiefs fans’ ire is actually playing some decent football. Yes, he was flagged for a very costly penalty this week, but his physical style of play also yielded some positive results in coverage. His stock is up, in part because it couldn’t have gone down from last week. Perhaps Scandrick can gradually win fans over instead of reminding us of all the ghosts of cornerbacks past. The Chiefs offensive line: Only one sack allowed each week so far against two teams that can get after the quarterback. Actually, Mahomes could have avoided both, but he stepped right into the defender each time. Run blocking was a bit of an issue last week, and the numbers still aren’t great, but they seem to be trending in the right direction. We thought that Mahomes might make up for some deficiencies in the pass protection, given his ability to extend plays. It turns out he can Cheap Xavier Williams Jersey , but the offensive line is starting to play better as a unit as well. At least they didn’t let the Steelers bully them this time.Others trending in the right direction: Allen Bailey, Ron Parker, Chiefs special teams, Dee FordSTOCK DOWNDenny Medley-USA TODAY SportsLinebacker/standup 5-tech, Breeland Speaks: The rookie has gotten off to a slow start. He’s getting nearly double the snaps of Tanoh Kpassagnon without a standout play to show for it. Box scores are not everything, but for what it’s worth, Speaks doesn’t yet have a tackle, much less a sack. Speaks has the size and strength to set the edge and be a difference maker against the run, but he may be finding that it takes more than that to win against NFL offensive linemen. The Chiefs’ ability to make it through a defensive play without a penalty: Penalties in the secondary wiped out two Chiefs turnovers, including one that would have been a touchdown. We can debate all day whether they were legit calls (both probably were), but it’s clearly something that the team needs to work on. For a defense that has some known deficiencies, giving opponents extra snaps and free yardage is not palatable. This defense is going to struggle taking the ball away without Marcus Peters and Eric Berry, so they have to find other ways to finish drives, instead of extending them by being too grabby.Inside linebacker Reggie Ragland: Ragland hasn’t been bad this year, but he’s shown his limitations in the passing game, and has missed more tackles than you’d like from your enforcer in the middle. He’s been banged up, so there’s hope that he’ll improve as the season goes on.Others trending in the wrong direction: Alex Ellis, Damien Williams, the three-man pass rushSTOCK FLATWide receiver Chris Conley: A mixed bag this week for Conley, with a touchdown and a late fumble (although it was caused by him trying to fight for extra yards). Conley may seem like the forgotten man on the Chiefs stellar wide receiver corps Cheap Chris Jones Jersey , but he’s a reliable blocker and will make a play now and then. Linebacker Justin Houston: I don’t want to hear about his “decline.” He’s still a difference maker for this team, even if he’s not filling up a box score every week. Safety Eric Murray: Murray has had an up and down season thus far. Against Pittsburgh, he had a chance at a sack, and he missed. That said, Murray has shown some ability to cover, as our own Craig Stout points out.Others who are who we thought they were: Anthony Hitchens, Demetrius Harris, Steven Nelson, Tanoh Kpassagnon, Tyreek HillWeek 5 True Power Rankings: Chiefs hold steady after factoring in numbers Week 5 is here, and after figuring in the data from the number-crunchers we’ve been tracking, the Kansas City Chiefs are still in second place overall behind the Los Angeles Rams. But the Jacksonville Jaguars — the team the Chiefs face at Arrowhead on Sunday — are right behind them! Here’s how the crunchers see the NFL this week:Cruncher Power Rankings for Week 5Chiefs AFC West Teams Other AFC TeamsThe Chiefs are still looking good, with an average cruncher ranking of third, which is down one spot from last week.Elo still likes the Chiefs — ranking them first — because the Chiefs are the last remaining undefeated team from last season’s top teams. The Rams — the other undefeated team — started the season from farther back in the pack, so by Elo’s reckoning, that’s only good for third right now.DVOA continues to be impressed with the overall play of the Chiefs so far — especially on offense.PE and SRS both give the Chiefs upticks in their rankings following their four-point victory over the Denver Broncos. Now let’s average the Pundit Power Rankings from Tuesday with the Cruncher Power Rankings we just showed you.True Power Rankings for Week 5Chiefs AFC West Teams Other AFC TeamsAs you can see, the Chiefs are still ranked second in the Week 5 True Power Rankings — tops in the AFC, and well ahead of their division rivals — which serves to confirm what we saw in Tuesday’s pundit power rankings.Elsewhere, the crunchers continue to like the Baltimore Ravens more than the pundits do. They’re holding steady with DVOA, SRS and PE — and with their 3-1 record Mitchell Schwartz Jersey , they’re catching up in Elo. But although the pundits are taking notice — ranking them seventh on Tuesday — they’re not yet convinced. In the crunchers’ estimation, the Green Bay Packers and the New England Patriots both rise by double digits this week, and the Miami Dolphins and Pittsburgh Steelers take a hard tumble. The pundits, however, didn’t see a big change with the Packers.Otherwise they agreed, giving boosts to the Patriots and downgrading the Dolphins and Steelers. Now let’s look at the grades for the week:Cruncher Grades for Week 5Chiefs AFC West Teams Other AFC TeamsNow that we’re a quarter of the way through the season, we can give the crunchers a little more credit for what they say.And here we see that the both the Chiefs and Jaguars are facing their toughest test of the season this Sunday. Both teams have faced four average (or below average) opponents thus far: the Chiefs have played the Chargers, Steelers, 49ers and Broncos, while the Jaguars have played the Giants (below average), Patriots, Titans and Jets. The only obvious difference is that the Chiefs have prevailed in all four of their games, while the Jaguars lost to the Titans.Still... it ought to be a barn-burner at Arrowhead on Sunday afternoon!Enjoy the game, and starting on Tuesday, we’ll see how the result from that game — and those from all the Week 5 games — shakes things up.
  4. Can Patrick Mahomes throw touchdown passes to 14 different Chiefs? Whatever else is true Cheap Justin Houston Jersey , Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has stirred the imaginations of those who look for unusual NFL records that could be broken. Here’s another one to examine — this one courtesy of Good Morning Football host Peter Schrager.Schrager is correct.Through three weeks of the season, 12 different Chiefs players have caught passes from Mahomes, and nine of them have caught at least one touchdown pass.Sammy Watkins caught his first touchdown pass as a Chief on Sunday, and Marcus Kemp recorded his first reception on the season.Of the three remaining pass catchers yet without a touchdown, Spencer Ware would probably be the most likely to get one, followed by Damien Williams and Kemp. But even if all three eventually get touchdown catches, that’s still just 12 — not a record-setting 14.So who’s left?Neither running back Darrel Williams or tight end Alex Ellis — the remaining offensive skill players on the active roster — have yet seen playing time. The most likely way either of them — or practice squad players like Gehrig Dieter, Josh Crockett or David Wells — are going to see the field would be if currently active players miss playing time due to injury. So how else could the Chiefs get to 14?The Chiefs don’t presently have a defensive back that seems like a good candidate to get snaps as an offensive player - like Deion Sanders did.Nor does head coach Andy Reid have much history of having linemen report as eligible receivers like Marty Shottenheimer used to do.Chiefs offensive lineman Joe Valerio became a Kansas City folk hero between 1993 and 1995, when he was targeted on tackle-eligible plays four times, resulting in four touchdown passes. But that seems odd, doesn’t it?Wouldn’t you expect Reid to be the guy who thinks of putting an eligible tackle on the field to create more misdirection for his offense, rather than the staid Shottenheimer?Barring injuries, something like that is probably what it will take for Patrick Mahomes to get touchdown passes to 14 different Chiefs in 2018.But in this season, just about anything might be possible. We’ll keep an eye on it.This Chiefs team brings back disturbing memories of the 2003 season Some Kansas City Chiefs fans are really nervous right now.If they were following the team in the early 2000s under head coach Dick Vermeil , they remember the 2003 season, when the Chiefs had an unstoppable offense coupled with a poor defense. That combination was sufficient to bring the Chiefs to the postseason with a 13-3 record that assured a first-round bye.But then came the infamous No-Punt Game against Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts scored on every one of their drives, and the Chiefs scored on every one of theirs — except for one drive ending with a missed Morten Anderson field goal, and another ending with a fumble by Priest Holmes. It added up to a 38-31 victory for the Colts. It would be a dozen years before the Chiefs returned to the divisional round of the playoffs. And now, some Chiefs fans are worried it’s happening all over again. So I thought I’d see if there’s really anything to be worried about.I picked seven commonly-used statistical categories to compare the 2003 and 2018 Chiefs on both offense and defense.Because the two seasons are separated by 15 years — and more than a little has changed in the NFL since then — I’m going to show you the bare stats, but no rankings.Instead, I’ve calculated standard deviations from average for each of these statistics, and they will be expressed as letter grades — just as we do in our True Power Rankings roundup every week. This solves two problems.First, comparing these stats with these letter grades allows us to compare these stats across the 15-year span between them; that’s one of the cool things about using standard deviations from average to compare them.Second, we won’t get ourselves worked up about differences in rankings that might not really be significant. If none of this makes sense to you, read the final part of the TPR methodology — the part with the equal-distribution graph.Or... just remember the rule: unless a grade is at least a full letter grade better (or worse) than another, the difference between the underlying stat is measurable, but not significant.Kansas City Chiefs 2003 and 2018Wow.Are you breaking out in a sweat yet?I know I am.As you can see, the statistical parallels between these two Chiefs seasons are striking.Every single one of these 2003 statistics is within a full letter grade of its 2018 counterpart — except for defensive yards given up Eric Fisher Jersey , which is worse than 2003.So looking at this data, you can’t really blame anyone who has already concluded that the Chiefs will have a very successful regular season, and then fall by the wayside to some wild-card team — simply because the Chiefs defense isn’t up to the challenge of the postseason. But it’s not time to give up on this season — not by a long shot.I say this not because I have a fan’s faith that the Chiefs defense will improve.I say this because we have already seen it improve.Yes, the Chiefs defense gave up more than 500 yards on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but they also gave up the fewest number of points they have all season — and scored some of their own to boot.It started the week before in Denver, but you could really see it on Sunday in Kansas City. They were playing with fire and passion, and it changed the outcome of both games. We’ve seen this before, you know.In 2015 — when the Chiefs started the season 1-5 — the defense gave up 26.5 points per game in those first six games. But in the last two losses — the ones to the Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings — you could see something had clicked in the defense. The Chiefs lost those games, but the defense allowed just 23 points in them. And that continued.Over the rest of the season, the defense allowed just 12.8 points per game, and was a big part of the reason the Chiefs finished with 10 straight wins. That doesn’t guarantee that for the rest of the season, the Chiefs defense will resemble what it was in the last two games more than it resembles what it was in the first three. But I’ve seen this movie before, and right now, I wouldn’t bet against the Chiefs defense.However... for the sake of argument Cheap Mitch Morse Jersey , let’s say I’m wrong. I’ve certainly been wrong before.Let’s say that the last two games were an outlier, and the only way for the Chiefs to win games during the remainder of the season will be to put a lot of points on the board.Let’s say the Chiefs do just what they did in 2003, and finish the season 13-3.What’s to stop some other team from coming in to Arrowhead and taking advantage of a poor Chiefs defense?Nothing.Nothing at all.Except that there is one other thing that is different than it was in 2003:Peyton Manning is selling pizza and insurance, and Patrick Mahomes is the Chiefs quarterback. In 2003, the Colts offense under Manning was just as effective as the Chiefs offense under Trent Green— as the Colts proved in that playoff game. But in 2018, there is no team in the AFC that compares to the Chiefs offense with Mahomes and his merry band of receivers. You can argue that the Los Angeles Rams and the New Orleans Saints have that kind of firepower available to them, but neither of those teams will face the Chiefs in January.February might be a different story, but we’ll just have to cross that bridge when we come to it.So I understand if you want to worry about a repeat of the 2003 season.Based on what we’ve seen so far, it’s an entirely reasonable concern. But there’s reason to believe that in this case, history won’t repeat itself.
  5. at linebacker Khalil Mack‘s injury situation was similar to last week’s and that’s exactly how things have played out.Mack missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday last week before returning to work on Friday and drawing a questionable tag on the final injury report of the week. Mack’s ankle kept him out Wednesday and Thursday again this week and he practiced on Friday before being listed as questionable again.Mack went on to miss last Sunday’s game Womens Allen Robinson II Jersey , which was the first game he’s missed in his NFL career, and the listing means we’ll have to wait to find out if he’ll also sit out against the Bills.Wide receiver Allen Robinson followed the same path as Mack last week and he’s been right beside him again this week as well. The only difference is that Robinson has been bothered by a groin injury rather than an ankle problem. There’s been a noticeable uptick in the Bears’ Roquan Smith’s play lately. That’s especially so after a 12-tackle performance he enjoyed against the Bills this past Sunday: his second performance of at least 12 tackles in four games. It was the highest tackle output of any other NFL linebacker in Week 9 aside from his veteran teammate in Danny Trevathan. Smith has been all over the field as he looks like the linebacker he was projected to be coming out of the 2018 NFL Draft. All the boxes of instinct, quickness Youth Leonard Floyd Jersey , and power are being checked off for the rookie. Any previous anger for Smith in a summer contract dispute looks silly at the moment (as it also was then). Smith’s impact is paying off in spades for a Bears defense slowly picking the pieces back up after two early losses in October. For his most recent efforts, Smith is in line to be recognized for his production as the NFL announced he was a nominee for the Rookie of the Week in Week 9. Other nominees include the Browns’ Baker Mayfield and Nick Chubb, the Falcons’ Calvin Ridley Womens Cody Parkey Jersey , and the Dolphins’ Jerome Baker. In comparison to Smith’s afternoon, Mayfield threw for 297 yards and two touchdowns in a loss to the Chiefs, while his backfield mate Chubb had 85 yards rushing and a touchdown. Ridley had 71 yards and a score in a win over Washington. And Baker had five tackles and a pick-six in a victory over the Jets. At a glance , if there were ever a week for Smith to win and come out as a top recognized rookie, it’d be in direct juxtaposition to this group. You know that whatever happens, the soft-spoken Chicago linebacker will just continue about his business as he always has. 6. stallment of the James Daniels positional drama , The Athletic’s Kevin Fishbain reported on Saturday that the Chicago Bears rookie will start at center in today’s matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs.Daniels had reportedly been receiving snaps at center with the second team offense last week, but has been listed on the depth chart at the left guard position. The news of his positional change comes in wake of Matt Nagy’s decision to sit most of the team’s starters in the first Bears home game of the preseason. He mentioned that the Bears having their best week of practice of the new year influenced the decision, but one would figure that injuries to the likes of Adam Shaheen and Leonard Floyd also played a factor in their decision to sit starters. One of the regular starters who will still play against the Chiefs is Eric Kush, as the current starting left guard. Kush is ahead of Daniels on the depth chart at the moment and is staying in the lineup. Daniels will presumably overtake Kush in the starting lineup to start the regular season, which is likely the explanation as to why the veteran is playing today. Whether or not the decision to start Daniels at center today is the catalyst towards the permanent switch that many have been clamoring for is, for the time being, fairly improbable. Nonetheless, the 2018 second round pick will have a chance to prove his versatility, and prove himself worthy of taking over as the starting center against Kansas City.Jacob Infante is a Chicago Bears and NFL Draft writer at SB Nation’s Windy City Gridiron. As the 1941 Major League Baseball season entered its final weekend, baseball fans wondered if the great Ted Williams would achieve the always exciting yet still impressive .400 batting average. He was hitting .401 entering Boston’s final series against the Athletics, and there was talk that perhaps he should sit out that series to make sure his average didn’t dip.But the Splendid Splinter was no louse. “If I’m going to be a .400 hitter, I want more than my toenails on the line,” he reputedly said. He played the entire series, cranked out seven hits in 12 at-bats, and finished the season at .406.Fans were ecstatic. This was a brilliant show of batting, drama and athletic boldness. What it was not, necessarily Cheap Tarik Cohen Jersey , was historic. That’s because Williams’ 1941 was the 28th time a major league ballplayer bagged the big 4-0-0, and ranked only 17th for the highest single-season batting average ever, far behind Hugh Duffy’s record .440.Only in retrospect did Teddy Ballgame’s .406 season average become part of history. After all, no one knew then that Williams’ 1941 would be remembered by future generations of baseball fans as the most recent .400 season MLB has ever seen.I feel the same way about the Bears 24-17 win over the Patriots in Week 15 of the 2000 season. There was nothing particularly spectacular about it at the time. We trailed 10-3, tied the game with 10 seconds remaining in the first half on a Shane Matthews touchdown pass to Eddie Kennison, scored on touchdowns in each of the next two quarters to go up 24-10 and held on against Drew Bledsoe and the Pats to get the W.That was December 10, 2000, a day remembered at the time as John Shoop’s first game as Bears offensive coordinator, following the pre-mature self-relieving of Gary Crowton. Our strong offensive showing came largely on the legs of James Allen, who grinded 97 yards on 37 carries and scored twice, once on a run and once on a catch.Other things people were talking about that day:Rookie Brian Urlacher, who was all over the field with nine tacklesPatriots first-year head coach Bill Belichick, who looked like his second NFL head coaching stint would be only nominally more success than his firstThe aforementioned Shoop, who helped the team produce its best passing attack in two monthsThe thrill of the Bears building a two-touchdown lead, only the fourth of the season, and maintaining control of a game through the fourth quarterWhat they were not talking about was the specific thrill of the Bears beating the Patriots. The Pats could have been any opponent that day and Bears fans would have been happy. But 18 years later, that game in December of 2000 stands as the final time the Bears have defeated New England Cheap Roquan Smith Jersey , their opponent this Sunday. What felt normal in the moment has become a historical beacon of a bygone time. What changed, arguably, is another element no one was talking about 18 years ago: the Patriots rookie backup quarterback, Tom Brady.Yes, Ol’ Five Rings is a perfect 4-0 against our Bears. He got his first crack at us in Champaign in 2002. He was a Super Bowl-champion by then but far from the Hall of Fame, yet he engineered a dramatic comeback on the road, overcoming deficits of 27-6 in the 3rd and 30-19 with five minutes to go to lead the Pats to a 36-33 win, the game-winning score coming with 21 seconds remaining. We’ve played him every four years since then, with outcomes ranging from horrifying to distressing. In 2006, both teams came in with Super Bowl aspirations. The 7-3 Pats won a dogfight against the 9-1 Bears, 17-13. This game is probably best remembered for Brady juking Brian Urlacher, and was the biggest “failed test” of the Bears v. Brady era.We entered the 2010 game as possible Super Bowl opponents once more, us at 9-3, them at 10-2. This one was over at halftime. The Pats went up 33-0 at the midpoint, scoring a 59-yard touchdown to Deion Branch on the half’s final play, and won 36-7. In my darkest, most cynical moments after the NFC championship game Cheap Mitchell Trubisky Jersey , as I clawed through a season’s worth of evidence to find proof that, “Well, we wouldn’t have won the Super Bowl anyway,” this game was where my brain went.Yet nothing was as ugly and draining as 2014. Under the impression that our previous game to Miami could be deemed “hideous” (the Brandon Marshall “unacceptable” game), we learned the next two weeks just what hideous looked like. The Pats started it off, going up 38-7 in the first half, and yet somehow making things worse by winning 51-23. (As for the next game, well... don’t click on this, I beg you.)And there you have it: four games against Brady, four losses. He is 41 now, and if he reaches his goal of playing until he is 45, we might get another shot at him. But four years is a long way to go, and in the meantime I have to assume that Sunday’s game will be our final chance to beat the Hall of Famer. From an in-the-now standpoint, no win would be bigger for our Bears at this point in the season. Even with our MVP ailing, we have a shot to beat the NFL’s benchmark franchise. A win against the Pats would validate our collective inklings about this team’s potential. It would be a statement win, the first of the Nagy era. That said, readers of my work know that I am a sports fan who believes to a degree in Signs and Symbols and Enticing Statistical Irrelevance. And so I noted last week that the 2018 Bears play all of the same teams as the 2006 Bears Youth Cody Parkey Jersey , and that our only regular season losses that year were to the Dolphins, Pats and Packers. The prophecy states, therefore, that we will lose Sunday to New England, and then run the table to reach 13-3, ultimately losing to some schlubby carpet-treading dome-huddler in the Super Bowl. However I have instituted the 1984/1985 prophecy corollary to declare that our loss this year will be a Here We Come year, and we shall be glorious champions in 2019.But really, who wants to play that game? The Bears have bagged wins against just about every other significant quarterback I can think of, and I would prefer to send TB12 into retirement being just the least bit skittish around Bears or bears for the rest of his days. Also, I want to finally beat the Pats for the first time in 18 years, not to mention right here in the present tense knock off a Super Bowl contender and prove our might as a rising force.Losing to New England to preserve the prophecy (which might not even be real, when you think about it) would be the equivalent of resting for the final weekend to keep our average at .400. I’m with Ted on this one: if my team is going to be Super Bowl champs, I want more than our toenails on the line.---Jack M Silverstein is Windy City Gridiron’s Bears historian, and author of “How The GOAT Was Built: 6 Life Lessons From the 1996 Chicago Bulls.” He is the proprietor of Chicago sports history Instagram “A Shot on Ehlo.” Say hey at @readjack.

The Chicago Bears have a chance to build some real national respect with a win in Miami, which is a tough place to play this time of year. Sure the Dolphins are reeling a bit, with two straight losses, and sure, the Fins may prove to be a bad team as the season progresses, but the Bears are hoping to keep their momentum going with their fourth straight victory. It’s an early battle of division leaders! The Bears have won three straight games, and they will try for their first 4-game (in season) winning streak since 2012. The Fins have lost two in a row. Chicago’s coaches will try to match wits with Dolphin head coach Adam Gase , offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains, and defensive coordinator Matt Burke. Those first two names should ring a bell for Bears’ fans as they were the last two offensive coordinators in Chicago.Gase and Loggains will try and devise a game-plan against their former colleague, Bears’ defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. When Gase was asked if the familiarity working along side Fangio would help them, he didn’t sound overly confident. “They’ll use it against us more than anything. Even though the defense is carrying the team, head coach Matt Nagy has many of us believing the offense will come through at some point. Even if the offense can only make small gains from a week to week basis, their D looks good enough to give them a chance every single game. The latest FanPulse survey did see Bears’ fan’s confidence levels dip a smidge, but only by 2%. Plus our fans are the most confident among all the NFC North fans at 82%.Here’s our our fans have voted this year.Like we did last week, we’ll take a peek at the confidence levels from the other NFC North teams. The Green Bay Packers lost 31-17 last week to the Washington Redskins, and as expected, their fans are feeling the pressure. The Minnesota Vikings got creamed by the Buffalo Bills last week (27 to 6) and their fans have spiraled into panic mode. The 57% drop in confidence from a week ago was the largest drop among all fans. Plus there’s also the Everson Griffen situation the team is dealing with. The biggest gain in confidence came from fans of the Detroit Lions (+48%) after their big win against the New England Patriots. This week’s Bears vs Buccaneers game will be very telling for fans of each team. The Bucs’ fans are riding high with a 93% confidence level, and that’s coming off a loss. 8. and unfortunately missing out on a second straight unofficial AFC divisional crown (shoutout to the Steelers Authentic Jordan Howard Jersey , Ravens, Bengals, and Browns), the Bears can still salvage their 2018 inter-conference play. That helping hand comes in the form of the lowly 2-6 Bills, who have a great defense, and one of the worst offenses ever in one the best period of NFL offensive play. Go figure. It won’t be an entirely easy game on the road at New Era Field, but it’s one the Bears should win and leave no doubt in. Here’s Windy City Gridiron’s staff picks for Bears-Bills. Robert Zeglinski: Bears 27 Bills 14Another week against the worst offensive team in NFL history presents another great opportunity for the Bears to rest Khalil Mack for a pivotal pending divisional stretch. They should take it. Lester A. Wiltfong Jr.: Bears 27 Bills 14Statistically speaking, the Bills have a good defense, but it won’t be enough to stop the multifaceted Chicago offense. Aaron Leming: Bears 31 Bills 13The Bills are a mess. Unless they magically get Josh Allen back, I don’t see how they can score points. This is the type of game where the Bears would do themselves many favors by blowing them out while gaining confidence heading into three straight NFC North games in an 11-day stretch.Jacob Infante: Bears 28 Bills 10The Bills are straight dookie. With or without Mack, the Bears defense should have no problem shutting down Buffalo’s offense.Sam Householder: Bears 20, Bills 10Another ugly win that the Bears are mostly in control of the whole time. The Bills’ passing defense has allowed the third-fewest yards , which will make it tough for Mitchell Trubisky and company. Andrew Link: Bears 31 Bills 9The Bills are coming off of a short week against their division foe in the Patriots. The Bills will have a letdown after that game and the Bears will storm Buffalo and take all their wings! Bears win big, as they should. ECD: Bears 28 Bills 10Despite having the third-ranked pass defense, the Bills have been a hot mess as a team. The Bears should be able to win this matchup on each side of the ball.WhiskeyRanger: Bears 26 Bills 9Who are the Bills trotting out at quarterback this week? I’m not going to bother Googling that, because the fact that I had to ask tells you all you need to know.Ken Mitchell: Bears 28 Bills 10I think Chicago’s offense will move the ball to a reasonable degree on the Bills, but I don’t see Buffalo putting up big points on Chicago unless there’s a significant gap in the turnover ratio. The Bears need to be careful with the ball, as always.WCG Contributors: Jeff Berckes; Patti Curl; Eric Christopher Duerrwaechter; Kev H; Sam Householder; Jacob Infante; Aaron Lemming; Andrew Link; Ken Mitchell; Steven Schweickert; Jack Silverstein; EJ Snyder; Lester Wiltfong, Jr.; Whiskey Ranger; Robert Zeglinski; Like us on Facebook.Bears vs. Chiefs 2018: Live updates from the game The Bears are resting a good amount of starters in their all-important third fourth preseason game against the Chiefs today, including Mitchell Trubisky. Matt Nagy and company are on to Green Bay in Week 1. Here’s the full list of 31 inactives:Notably, James Daniels will start at center against Kansas City’s first team defense. Eric Kushwill flank him at left guard. Meanwhile, Roy Robertson-Harris and Jonathan Bullard still have a defensive competition to sort out and both will play. Of all the main receivers, Kevin White will also receive snaps against the Chiefs. So there are things to keep an eye on!For live scoring updates during today’s preseason game, you can follow along here. This is your official Open Thread during today’s action as well Womens Eric Kush Jersey , and thread responsibly. We’re almost at the end of the preseason and are just 15 days away from the regular season opener. Nagy’s “Revenge Game” against Kansas City stands in the way. The game starts at 12:00 p.m. CT.Even while not playing, Jordan Howard arrives to Soldier Field in style. First quarter update: No Trubisky, no first-team offensive line, no problem for the Bears evidently. On the first possession of the game, Chase Daniel took Chicago right down the field (while aided by penalties). Benny Cunningham would take it in for the score on a nice cutback in his return from injury. Not to be outdone, the first-team Chiefs offense led by Patrick Mahomes responded on the next series. The explosive Tyreek Hill did a bunch of the heavy lifting. And last year’s NFL rushing leader, Kareem Hunt, finished it off to tie it up at 7-7.In what is clearly becoming a shootout the Bears would then again score led by Daniel. This time the veteran hit Kevin White for his first ever career touchdown. That has to feel great for a man in White who has been through so much. The Bears lead 14-7 at the start of the second quarter. Second quarter update:After a terrific first quarter, the Bears offense would not let up. Is part of their performance rooted in a bad first-team Chiefs defense? Probably. But it still counts!Following a Chiefs field goal, Chicago ran it’s attack through their rookie seventh rounder Javon Wims. And he did not disappoint as evidenced by this 53-yard catch and run. Two players later, Wims put his 6-foot-4 frame to good use for an acrobatic touchdown to make it 21-10. Good throw from Daniel, and a better catch from Wims. With plays like this , Wims is an easy lock for the Bears’ final 53-man roster. In a surprising turn of events, the Bears’ defense was able to hold it’s own Kansas City’s first-team attack with some forced three-and-outs. That set up one last field goal drive to make it 24-10, which was facilitated by Chase Daniel’s legs. Doug Pederson won a Super Bowl with the Eagles in his second season as a coach, and Nagy’s Bears backups are getting one over on Andy Reid’s first stringers. Not an ideal day for the mentor.Notable first half performers:Chase Daniel: 15/18, 198 yards, two touchdowns, 149.5 passer rating. Six carries, 47 yardsJavon Wims: Two receptions, 70 yards, one touchdownIsaiah Irving: Five tacklesThird quarter update:Not much doing in the third quarter for either team offensively. Notably, the Bears were able to keep the Chiefs’ first team offense out of the end zone on four plays near the goal line. Tyler Bray obviously, isn’t Daniel. 9. As the Buffalo Bills prepare to face a new opponent each week Womens Marcus Murphy Jersey , fans take on the age-old arch-nemesis know as “hunger.” Never fear, Be’ll dive into enemy territory to scout their signature moves and put a “Buffalo” spin on it. Translated, each week we’ll share a themed recipe based on who the Bills are playing, including a custom wing sauce to go with each dish. Our opponent this week:Tennessee TitansSlow-Cooked Pulled BBQ Chicken: Having been to Nashville one time for a conference at work, I proclaim myself wholly expert on their sauce techniques. OK, maybe not, but I did eat a lot of it. While my expertise may be in doubt, the beauty of BBQ sauce is the sheer volume of great ways to make it. For this week, we take a simple sauce recipe and steer it the way of Nashville, as defined by research and impressions from when I was there. The name of the game is “sweet,” with a sauce that feels right at home being cooked with the meat or used as a condiment to finish the deal. And of course we’ll wing it up notch with some hot sauce. We’re using a slow cooker as they’re commonly available. The sauce can easily be used on chicken cooked in other ways. 10. Tyrod Taylor remembers winning the starting job Bills Corey Bojorquez Jersey , throwing touche to celebrate the end of a 17-year playoff drought. His three years with the Bills were special, filled with long-lasting memories. His exit wasn't.Traded to Cleveland in March for a third-round draft pick (No. 65 overall), Taylor said Tuesday that he holds no bitterness toward the Bills, but that the team's decision to part ways with him is fueling his desire to deliver for the Browns. It's driving him."Each year has its own way of motivating itself," Taylor said. "But definitely how I think it ended there, it's motivation for this year."Coming off a "perfect" performance in his preseason debut for the Browns last week, Taylor, who has quickly established himself as a leader in Cleveland, will face his former teammates for the first time Friday night when the Bills visit in the second exhibition for both teams.Taylor made it clear that there's no resentment and that his focus this week, and every week, is on improving the Browns — not paying back the Bills."I'm looking forward to Week 2 of the preseason," Taylor said. "I'm not going to make this about me or Buffalo. It's an opportunity for us to get better as a team, an opportunity for me to get better as a player."While that's honorable, Taylor reiterated that if somewhere down the line the Browns and Bills ever matched up in the postseason, he'd love to show Buffalo what it's missing."I wouldn't say it was painful," Taylor said of being dealt by the Bills. "I have nothing to hold (hang) my head about in my time in Buffalo. It was a progression from a players' standpoint each and every year, but of course why would I not want to beat that team in the playoffs if it comes down to that?"I'm always excited to compete. But I know those guys, played against those guys Bills Matt Milano Jersey , the majority of those guys for the past three years, some new players and I'd love to play against those guys."It didn't take long for the 29-year-old Taylor to ingratiate himself to the Browns. He has set an example on and off the field, whether arriving at 5 a.m. to get in an early morning workout or staying late to break down film. It's the only way Taylor knows, and he's having a strong influence on rookie Baker Mayfield, the No. 1 overall pick who will one day supplant him as Cleveland's starter.Mayfield said Taylor is showing him how to be a professional."Just the work ethic and everything he brings to the table every day," Mayfield said, when asked about Taylor's standards. "It's the same every day. You hear (offensive coordinator) coach (Todd) Haley talk about 'not being a yo-yo guy. You want to be consistent,' and Ty really, really is the example of that."He's the same guy every day. You know exactly what you're going to get out of him, and that's important for our guys to see that. They see the standard. They see the expectations, and he lives up to it every day."Taylor set a high bar for himself last week by recording a perfect 158.3 rating in two series against the New York Giants. He completed 5 of 5 passes for 99 yards and a touchdown before turning the offense over to Mayfield, who shined in his NFL preseason debut.Mayfield's performance prompted a push — locally and nationally — for the Browns to start the Heisman Trophy winner over Taylor. But while there's noise outside the Browns, Taylor's world is tranquil."I really don't hear those comments," he said. "I've always been focused on myself. Like I said from Day One, I'm in competition with myself and how can I make myself better each and every day and I'm going to keep having that mindset and push myself to be the best player I can be."NOTES: Tempers flared during practice, which featured three fights, including one involving Pro Bowl WR Jarvis Landry and starting CB Terrence Mitchell. As Landry rolled on the ground following a catch, Mitchell went over the top of him and hit the receiver's back. Landry popped up and slammed the ball of Mitchell's helmet before they grabbed each other's facemasks. Coach Hue Jackson chalked the skirmishes up to the dog days of camp. "This is football. We have been going after it Rafael Bush Jersey ," Jackson said. "It is not something that we want. We are men. Guys know as long as we do not start swinging with our fists and we let it go, we can move on from it." ... Former Ohio State DT Jonathan Hankins is scheduled to work out for the Browns on Wednesday. He previously played for the Giants and Colts. 11. ye on the 2018 season Womens Ezekiel Elliott Jersey , but somehow time has flown and here we are.The Cowboys have a 3-4 record to show for the season’s first seven weeks and they also have a brand new receiver in Amari Cooper. Will he be enough to put them over the edge the rest of the season? It sure is going to be probably very stressful fun to find out.How is the world viewing the Cowboys now that they’re below .500 again with a new wide receiver? Here’s the latest batch of power rankings.SB Nation: 23rd, previously 21stDallas has been jump-roping their way through the twenties this season. Until they do something substantial nobody is going to believe in them as a legitimate force in the NFL. 18th, previously 14thLosing on the road to the Redskins saw the Cowboys falling all over the place, but as mentioned the Amari Cooper hype is starting to set in.... sot of.ESPN: 22nd, previously 20thThe worldwide leader always adds a spin to their rankings and this week they focused on what teams need more from. Surprise, it’s Amari Cooper. Expectations are big.Sports Illustrated: 20th, previously t-15thSI had the Cowboys ranked 20th two weeks ago and then bumped them up five spots Womens Travis Frederick Jersey , but we are back where we started. Such is the jump-rope life. This particular outlet also includes the highest and lowest votes that each team got. Surprisingly one person had the Cowboys ranked 14th. What a time to be alive.USA Today: 18th, previously 19th (seriously)The Cowboys rose in USA Today’s power rankings despite losing to the Redskins on Sunday, and perhaps the way they fought is part of that. Maybe there’s a belief here that Amari Cooper makes them that much better, but either way it’s a bit shocking.Bleacher Report: 21st, previously 16thDallas is generally regarded as a slightly below average team by most outlets, and BR is no different. They also touched on what feels like the primary reason the Cowboys have struggled this season, the spot which we all hope Amari Cooper can help rectify. The Cowboys have re-signed veteran receiver Brice Butler , who had left Dallas in free agency last spring but was released by the Arizona Cardinals before the season.Dallas released rookie safety Tyree Robinson on Tuesday to make room on its roster for Butler.Butler in April signed a two-year deal with Arizona after playing in 36 games for Dallas the past three seasons. He was listed as the No. 2 receiver behind Larry Fitzgerald for much of the Cardinals' camp, but was also slowed by a foot injury and part of the final cuts to get their roster to 53 players. In 61 games over five NFL seasons, Butler has 73 catches for 1,177 yards and eight touchdowns. He was picked by Oakland in the seventh round of the 2013 draft and spent two seasons with the Raiders before going to Dallas.Dallas also released defensive tackle Aziz Shittu from the practice squad, and signed defensive tackle Adolphus Washington to the practice squad.
  12. Jerry Jones: Cowboys haven’t had a “true No. 1” receiver for several yearsr department this season. Not only are they failing to have success themselves Color Rush Maliek Collins Jersey , but part of the reason they just lost to the Houston Texans is because of a superstar wideout in DeAndre Hopkins. It’s one thing to know something, but it’s another to have it rubbed in your face. Maybe that’s what happened to Jerry Jones because he’s been awfully cavalier with his comments about a “number one” receiver in the fallout of the loss. The leading receiver on the Cowboys for almost the last decade has been Dez Bryant. Obviously Dez was released by the team this past offseason, but that was less than a year ago which makes Jerry’s comments on 105.3 The Fan Tuesday morning interesting. He noted that it had been “several years” since the Cowboys had a true top threat. When Jones made his comments about not having one in general immediately following Sunday’s loss, they naturally stirred up questions:Why didn’t you get a No. 1 receiver then? Why did you only sign the players that you did?Why didn’t you draft someone who could be that player? As always in situations like this, the questions aren’t all necessarily rational, but they happen in times like these. We weren’t the only one making remarks though, Dez Bryant made yet another plea to re-join the team that released him six months ago by inferring that he could be the player Jones is looking for.A few things seem clear at this point:The Cowboys don’t have a “No. 1” receiverThey haven’t had one in some timeConsidering Dez Bryant was on the team as recently as last season, the Cowboys didn’t view him as a “No. 1” receiver and therefore don’t right now when needing one desperatelyDez Bryant was a fantastic wide receiver across the whole of his career with the Cowboys, but is it really fair to say that he was a “No. 1” receiver over the last few seasons? Of course not. What Dez did in 2016 was generally underrated as far as things go, and to his credit he dealt with his own injury and a quarterback change; however, the point remains that Dez never re-gained the form he had from 2012-2014 after he signed his contract extension in 2015.That’s about it. The secret is out: The Cowboys suck on third down. Their conversion rate for the whole season is 33.3% (34 of 102). That’s hideous and ranks the Cowboys 28th in the league, just ahead of the inept offenses of the Browns, Jets, Bills, and Cardinals. Here’s Calvin Watkins of The Athletic, laying the blame for the Cowboys’ third-down woessquarely at Prescott’s feet.A lot of people will reflexively blame this on the quarterback, and while that’s not entirely wrong, it’s not entirely right either. Watkins does add the following quote from Jason Garrett, who points out that the inability to execute on third down goes beyond the just the QB:Still, a lot of the discussion about the Cowboys over the last week has centered on Prescott, so let’s examine Prescott in a little more statistical detail.Watkins uses Prescott’s passer rating and completion percentage to illustrate Prescott’s struggles on third down, and that’s a good starting point. So let’s extend that a little and look at Prescott’s passer rating and completion percentage across all three downs: Interestingly, Prescott’s passer rating on first down (91.7) ranks him 19th among 34 QBs with at least 100 pass attempts through Week 9. Similarly Allen Hurns Jersey , his rating on second down (95.9) ranks him 20th. But on third down, he drops to 30th (74.0), barely ahead of part-time QBs like C.J. Beathard (65.0), Ryan Tannehill (57.4), Josh Allen (41.1), and Josh Rosen (39.1).So here’s the key question: What’s happening on third downs that turns an otherwise average QB into a bottom-of-the-league passer? To get a better handle on that question, we have to move beyond passer rating. One of the issues with passer rating is that it rates an eight-yard gain on third-and-10 more favorably than a two-yard gain on third-and-one. But the game of football is predicated on “moving the sticks” to achieve a new set of downs. So when looking at third-down performance we need to understand a team’s, or a QB’s, ability to gain a first down in such situations, and not just look at some random yardage numbers that don’t tell you anything about the ability or inability to move the sticks. One metric that does that is a stat called “Failed Completions” which denotes the percentage of attempts that a quarterback threw short of the minimum yards needed for a successful play. On first down, a play is considered a success if it gains 45 percent of needed yards; on second down, a play needs to gain 60 percent of needed yards; on third or fourth down, only gaining a new first down (or scoring a TD) is considered success. Here’s the Failed Completions Percentage on first, second, and third downs for the 34 quarterbacks who have had a minimum of 100 pass attempts through Week 9 this year. For your convenience, the table is sortable (just click on the blue column headers).Failed Completion percentage through Week 9, 2018 On first down, Prescott ranks in the top 10 of all passers by failed completion percentage; only 15.2% of his completions fail to get at least 45% of the required yardage on first down. One second down, Prescott ranks just outside the top ten (13th) with a failed completion percentage of 21.4%. Combined, Prescott has a failed completion percentage of just 18.6% (19 failed completions on 90 total completions) on first and second down, which ranks as the ninth best value in the NFL.The numbers here are clear: The Cowboys have a quarterback who reliably delivers the required yards on first and second down, never mind what some hothead on Twitter may claim about his accuracy, reads Authentic Deonte Thompson Jersey , or footwork. That doesn’t mean Prescott is perfect, far from it. He still has issues with his mechanics, he doesn’t throw downfield enough, and his completion percentage isn’t where it should be. But on first and second down, the Cowboys’ passing game with Prescott at the helm is keeping the offense “on schedule.”The Cowboys are a run-first, ball-control offense. As such, the entire offense is predicated on staying on schedule with a high percentage of runs and a lot of short passes on first and second down that are designed to get the team into manageable third-down situations. But this year, things went to hell in a hand basket on third down for Prescott and the Cowboys, where Prescott has a staggering failed completion rate of 51.4%, the worst value of any QB on the list above. So the question again is: What is happening on third downs that turns a top 10 QB in terms of failed completions on first and second downs into the worst-ranked passer in the league on third downs? To get a better feel for that, here’s a look at how Prescott’s failed completions compare between his standout rookie season in 2016 and this year: Again, the numbers are clear: On first and second down, Dak Prescott is playing as efficiently as he did in 2016, regardless of the many hot takes out there claiming otherwise. Sure, defenses may be more willing to give up the underneath stuff, and that might influence the numbers, but that’s impossible to quantify. So if Prescott is playing as well today on first and second down as he did two years ago, then the failure on third down must be due to more than just the “DAK SUCKZ!!!” battle cry of disappointed fans. And Roger Staubach seems to agree:You’d think that one of those “other things” might be the length of third downs in 2018, on the assumption that the Cowboys are facing more 3rd-and-long situations than they did in 2016, which would make it harder to convert for a first down. Surprisingly though, that’s not the case. The average yards-to-go on third down this year is 7.98 which is only marginally higher than the 7.32 in 2016.What’s a lot more interesting to look at is who Dak Prescott is throwing to on third down. In 2016, Prescott threw the most completions on third down to Cole Beasley (23 completions), Jason Witten (18) Youth Chidobe Awuzie Jersey , and Ezekiel Elliott (11). In 2018, the slot guy, the running back, and the tight end continue to get the most completions, even though the name of the tight end has changed. Cole Beasley (14), Ezekiel Elliott (10), and Geoff Swaim (4) are the Cowboys’ leading receivers in terms of completions on third downs this year. Here’s how their numbers compare: Cole Beasley had a spectacular year in 2016, when only two of his 23 receptions on third down (8.7%) were failed completions that ended up short of the sticks. Beasley that year was a veritable first-down machine, but that was then, and this is now: with a failed completion percentage of 42.9% Beasley isn’t even an average player anymore, as the NFL failed completion average on third down for the 34 quarterbacks we looked at above is 30.5%.Also in 2016, we were already seeing that Jason Witten was no longer a reliable target on third down, and his 55.6% failed completion percentage documents that. Unfortunately, his replacement in 2018 hasn’t improved on that number. Ezekiel Elliott wasn’t and isn’t a viable option on third down passes. 18 of the 21 passes completed to Elliott on third down in 2016 and 2018 were failed completions. Essentially, throwing to Elliott on third down is equivalent to punting. Elliott’s numbers are obviously hurt by him being Checkdown Charlie on third downs, but why Elliott remains a part of the game plan on passing third downs - beyond being an extra blocker - is a mystery. That still leaves the other receivers and other running backs and their effectiveness on third down. The Cowboys have seen wholesale change among the wide receivers above, but the results have remained surprisingly consistent: When Dak Prescott completes a pass these wide receivers on third down it usually results in a first down. Again, Prescott also needs to improve his completion percentage on third downs, but it looks like who he throws to is a much bigger determinant of third-down success than how accurate he is with his throw. So why do the Cowboys continue to dump off passes on third down to their slot guy, their running back, and their tight end?Is it because Prescott doesn’t see the supposedly open guys downfield, or is it because those receivers can’t get separation once they are beyond the sticks? Or is it because the Cowboys hardly ever try to scheme their wide receivers open, instead hoping for each WR to win his one-on-one matchup on his own? Or is it because the offensive line can’t hold off the pass rush long enough for the receivers to get open beyond the sticks? Or is it because the offensive coordinator continues to call plays featuring an ineffective Beasley , Elliott, and Swaim?Since Beasley’s breakout year in 2016, opposing defenses have regularly put him in bracket coverage, and have essentially removed him as an effective third-down threat. The Jaguars are the only team so far this season not to do so and were promptly burned by Beasley for a season-high 101 yards. Even more significantly, Beasley had four successful third-down conversions against the Jaguars, which is as exactly as much as he had against the remaining seven opponents combined! So if you know that Beasley is going to get bracket coverage, why continue calling plays designed to get him the ball on third down? If you know you’re QB might be prone to dump off the ball to the RB on third down, and that those plays almost never succeed, why have a running back on the field on passing third downs in the first place? And if you know that you have a high success rate throwing to your wide receivers on third down, but that they have trouble getting sufficient separation beyond the sticks, why not scheme to get them open with rub routes or pick plays? Or perhaps aligning your receivers a little more often in bunch or stack formations in order to gain a little bit of free space for them to operate in?Many of the issues with the Cowboys’ third-down offense are home-made, and when the next pass is completed short of the sticks, it is the culmination of a lot of things that have gone wrong before Prescott even threw the ball. A lot goes into the successful execution of third-down play, starting with the right play-call, the proper blocking by the O-line, receivers who can get open beyond the sticks, and a QB who can deliver the ball. The numbers show that throwing to Ezekiel Elliott on third down is essentially equivalent to punting. So why do the Cowboys continue doing it?When opposing defenses took away Cole Beasley as a reliable first-down machine, the Cowboys had no answers. In this context, I’d be looking very, very hard at the guy in charge of the offense and play-calling.But sure, let’s focus only on Prescott and his shortcomings.
  13. fantasy football calendar where all half you had your dreams of a perfect season dashed onto the rocks. We’re already dealing with a bit of a miniature crisis as the tight end position Youth Mitchell Trubisky Jersey , already shallow, took two major blows. The first was a season-ending injury for Delanie Walker, the Titans steady performer. A nasty ankle injury ends his season and, at age 34, may have played his last snap. Walker has been a perennially underrated tight end in real life and in the fake football game we play and while I didn’t have him on any of my teams, this one hurts. The second injury was to our old friend Greg Olsen, who re-fractured his foot on Sunday. Absolutely brutal news for one of the great men in the league. The Panthers have not put him in season-ending IR and appear willing to carry him on the roster in hopes that he can make a recovery. Olsen was able to return last year but he simply wasn’t very effective when on the field. Store him in an IR slot if that’s available to you and see what happens but set your expectations low. Olsen and Walker were in my top 6 in my preseason rankings, so this is a major blow to the position. I lost Olsen in two leagues and replaced him with Jared Cook before the Monday Night game and with Austin Sefarian-Jenkins on a waiver claim. I certainly don’t “trust” either of those two players and I’ll have my eye out for any break out candidates. A few names that might be on your wire that you should consider:Ben Watson: Caught 4 balls for 44 yards back on the Drew Brees offense. You can do worse than catching a piece of that offense.Ricky Seals-Jones: Didn’t do much with his 4 targets, but the Arizona Cardinals are high on this guy.Jonnu Smith: Walker’s replacement for the Titans who had some preseason buzz attached to him. Next man up. Jesse James: The Steelers have a ton of weapons and he’s never been consistent, but that offense has the capability to put up a lot of points. Your turn. Are you pumped about your squad or ready to hit the drop button on the whole team? Questions on start/sit Blue Eddie Goldman Jersey , trades, and streamers, hit up the comments below. Social media, local radio, and fantasy football forums all want to know; where’s Jordan Howard? The Chicago Bears’ 224-pound running back has started all five games so far, and he ranks 23rd in the NFL with 275 yards rushing. He has a 3.5 yards per carry average, and he has 1 touchdown. He also has 10 receptions (no drops by he way) for 78 yards. From a purely production standpoint his numbers are down from his first two seasons. In his first 5 starts as a rookie in 2016, he rushed for 438 yards, with 12 receptions for 121 yards. Last year, he rushed for 328 yards , with 10 catches for 50 yards in his first 5 starts. When you consider he was the focal point of both of those offenses in 2016 and 2017, and just one of many weapons in 2018, those numbers make sense. In my latest T Formation Conversation podcast, I get more in-depth on the Bears’ offense and look at why Howard’s numbers are down, but I also look at where his numbers could be heading as they progress through the 2018 season. Here are a few other numbers that caught my eye. Last year Howard had 92 total touches, and this year he has 88. That’s not as large a disparity that I figured it would be with his numbers down. And here are his playing time percentages so far. Week 1 - 71% at Green BayWeek 2 - 73% vs SeattleWeek 3 - 62% at ArizonaWeek 4 - 54% vs Tampa BayWeek 6 - 51% at MiamiGive the show a listen and let me know what you think about Howard’s usage so far. 14. recorded at least one victory so far and can survive September with a .500 record or better. A good fantasy draft can get your team off to a fast start Youth Eric Kush Jersey , but leagues are won and lost on the waiver wire every year. Also, get active in the trade market! If you’ve got a glaring weakness somewhere, look around for a trading partner. A couple of guys really established themselves as legitimate receiving options last week and they square off this Sunday. Tyler Boyd of the Bengals has posted two good weeks in a row and with the Bengals providing a lot of volume in the passing game, I think he’s a safe bet to keep that going. The Bengals travel to Atlanta who just saw rookie Calvin Ridley blow up last week against the Saints for 3 scores. You’re probably not going to get that effort from Ridley again but that’s two straight weeks he has been integral to that offensive attack. With injuries to Keanu Neal and Deion Jones on that Atlanta defense, the Falcons are going to be slinging it around the yard all year. I’m signing off on Boyd and Ridley as WR3 / Flex starts herein with the chance to be in that WR2 range. It’s also interesting to note that as we enter week 4, all 4 of the top rookie signal callers have now won their starting gigs. Sam Darnold won the job out of camp for the Jets and has predictably been up and down on an offense with limited weapons. Baker Mayfield came off the bench to help the Browns win their first game since 2016 against Darnold’s Jets last Thursday , and was named the starter this week. Josh Allen won his second start against the heavily favored Minnesota Vikings in a game that ruined survivor pools for most people (including me). Finally, Josh Rosen entered the game late last week to throw the ball at the Navy and Orange team a couple times as he tried to avoid decapitation by Khalil Mack. My general rule is that rookie QBs aren’t going to be particularly useful so avoid them, particularly when there are plenty of solid choices in established veterans. However, if you’re playing in a 2 QB league or you’re caught flat footed with an injury to Jimmy G, or you’re just looking for some upside, you may be dipping your toe in the water. My preference out of this group is probably Mayfield because I do believe there are good weapons in this offense and he seems fearless to throw the ball down the field. Rosen was my favorite coming out of the draft Adrian Amos Jersey , but they need to shift their offensive philosophy if he’s going to be useful and I don’t think that’s likely. The Cardinals do have a few interesting matchups where they’ll likely be trailing early, which may force them to abandon their conservative approach and sling it. Related: keep an eye out for Christian Kirk. I’m not as sold on Darnold or Allen for this year, but there’s at least a good floor on Allen with his running ability. Again, if you’re dipping your toe into these waters, it’s either out of desperation or curiosity – just don’t get too cute. Finally - I was a guest on the RB1 fantasy podcast this week and got a chance to talk about some start / sit options on a few games including the Bears / Bucs. Take a listen! As always, I can be found @gridironborn on the Twitter for last minute fantasy advice. Your turn – what’s on your mind as we close out September?Chicago Bears Training Camp Recap The Chicago Bears are taking a break from on field practice today down in Bourbonnais Authentic Khalil Mack Jersey , so this was a natural time for us to catch our breath and recap everything that has gone on so far at training camp. 15. Statistic and Information System Roquan Smith Jersey , as are the accompanying pictures. What if I told you that the Chicago Bears would out-gain the New England Patriots (453 yards to 381), have more first downs than them (29 to 21), a better third down conversion rate (8 of 16 for 50% to 6 of 13 for 46%), and drop 31 points on their defense while only allowing Tom Brady and the Pats’ offense to rack up 24 points against them? Most of us would take that, but football is a funny game.Even though the Bears did enough on offense and defense to pick up the win, their special teams allowed two touchdowns, and the Bears lost 38-31 to what is probably the best team in the AFC again in 2018. As fans of a young team, our only hope is that they learn how to play a full sixty minute, three phase game at some point. It’s okay to be pissed off that they aren’t able to close these winnable games out, while also being excited for where this team could be once they do figure everything out. Those two feelings aren’t mutually exclusive. The Bears may be 3-3, but they’ve been fun to watch so far this season. If there’s not a light at the end of the rebuilt tunnel, then we’ve got a Phil Emery/Marc Trestman scenario playing out, and I just don’t believe that to be the case. Let’s take a closer look at the playing time break downs for the Bears, and also some individual stats.OFFENSEThis was one of Mitchell Trubisky’s worst games as a pro. He was erratic all day, he was sacked twice, and he threw two interceptions. He was barely over 50% at 26 for 50, with a passer rating of 69.8, but his 333 yards was the second most in his career, and his third straight game over 300 yards. He also had 6 scrambles for 81 yards, including this fantastic touchdown. Trubisky’s top target was tight end Trey Burton, who came down with 9 of 11 targets for 126 yards and a TD. Tarik Cohen was the most targeted with 12 Authentic Allen Robinson Jersey , and he caught 8 for 69 and a TD.Cohen added 14 yards on 6 runs, and a 17 yard punt return. Anthony Miller was targeted 7 times and he hauled in 2 for 35 yards. Taylor Gabriel had 3 receptions for 26 yards. Kevin White — remember him? — caught both of his targets for 64 yards. Allen Robinson II only caught 1 (5 targets) for 4 yards. If Robinson is going to take time off because of his groin injury, I’d like to see White get those reps instead of Josh Bellamy. Jordan Howard had 39 yards rushing on 12 carries, and a TD. Ha also caught 1 ball for a 9 yard gain. After the game head coach Matt Nagy talked about his displeasure with their ground game saying, “Our run game has to get better.”Agreed, but what seems to be the problem?“It’s everybody,” he said via the Chicago Sun Times. “And we just need to figure out how we can do that, what’s best for us identity-wise. And it’s not one person.”I think the problems with the sputtering running game starts with Nagy. The offensive line hasn’t exactly been great as run blockers, but the team hasn’t stuck with the run enough to see. Chicago’s o-line wasn’t flagged once in the game. DEFENSEThe Bears allowed Tom Brady to have a 108.2 passer rating, and the Patriots’ running game to get 4 yards per carry. Too many snaps for Akiem Hicks and a hobbled Khalil Mack, and not enough for speedy Roquan Smith. Hicks ended up with 2 tackles, and Mack had 1. Smith had 5 tackles, a sack and a tackle for loss. Danny Trevathan led the Bears in tackles with 10. Corner Kyle Fuller had 5 tackles, an interception and 2 passes defended. Safety Eddie Jackson also had 5 tackles and also the first penalty (a face mask) of his NFL career. Rookie defensive lineman, Bilal Nichols, had his best day as a pro, while also playing the third most snaps among the d-line. He had 4 tackles, a quarterback hit, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.SPECIAL TEAMSThe players listed above only appeared in the third phase. The Patriots had a Cordarrelle Patterson kick return go for a touchdown, and they also had a blocked punt that they returned for a touchdown. For more on the Patterson TD, check out this Tweet. The 4 punts that Patrick O’Donnell got off went for a 34 yard net average. Kicker Cody Parkey was perfect on the day with a 46 yard field goal and 4 extra points , but he only had 2 kickoffs deep enough for touchbacks. Besides his 2 tackles on defense, Nick Kwiatkoski also had 1 on special teams to go along with a forced fumble that DeAndre Houston-Carson recovered. Other Bears’ recording special teams tackles were Ben Braunecker, Joel Iyiegbuniwe, Josh Bellamy, and Benny Cunningham, who also had 92 yards on 4 kickoff returns. For the full Bears vs. Patriots box score you can check this out, and the game summary can be found here. It has been a weird two week stretch for the Chicago Bears. They went from first to worst and back to first in the NFC North, but from a national perspective, pundits still thought highly of the Bears even after they lost two straight games. I expected them to drop down the Power Rankings after losing to the Dolphins and Patriots, but that didn’t happen. They beat the Jets in convincing fashion without starting outside linebacker Khalil Mack, and starting wide receiver Allen Robinson II, so I wonder if this victory will catapult them up this week’s rankings.Let’s find out...We’l start with the Mothership, SB Nation, and they moved the Bears up to 8 after being just outside the top 10 a week ago at 11.Here’s how our sister site, Bleeding Green Nation, has the Bears this week.Let’s check in on the always comical Pride Of Detroit.
